Chronically ill individuals are increasingly turning to Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) as a means of achieving a dignified death. This raises the question: why can't we focus on providing them with a dignified life instead? The author, who has lived with Type 1 diabetes and long COVID, reflects on the case of Kiano Vafaeian, a 26-year-old granted MAID due to his debilitating conditions. The author argues that the rules surrounding MAID are often based on a narrow understanding of autonomy and individual choice, neglecting the complex needs of those with chronic illnesses. The healthcare system, driven by specialization and a lack of coordination, fails to provide adequate support and treatment options for chronic illnesses like diabetes and long COVID. This leads to feelings of loneliness, shame, and a sense of being an 'invisible kingdom' within the medical system. The author emphasizes the importance of listening to patients' stories and providing comprehensive care, rather than focusing solely on autonomy. They advocate for a more holistic approach to healthcare, where doctors are trained to listen and understand the complexities of chronic illnesses. The author also introduces the concept of 'crip time', challenging the idea that human worth is measured by speed and productivity.
